Triodad was a small island community fifteen years ago with only a few hundred people on the island. Everyone knew everyone and lived peacefully among each other. However, they relied heavily on outside help in order for them to survive. There were few main roads and even fewer cars, which caused people to rely on horses and carts to get from one side of the island to the other. There was a single ferry that would take people without boats to the mainland and it would only come to the island twice a day. Life on Triodad was peaceful and relaxing, never having to really worry about the things other people in the world. No one seemed to have stress or the need to overmedicate for every ailment, the beach or the company seeming to cure any ailments they had.
One day, an unknown, untreatable, highly contagious disease broke out and ran rampant across the island before anyone had time to react, shattering the peaceful air that Triodad seemed to constantly have. The first few cases went to the mainland in order to seek help, but they were quickly put into quarantine and unsuccessfully treated. After these people died, the entire island of Triodad was quarantined, no one was allowed on or off. Food and other supplies stopped coming, the ferry also stopped coming. The islanders were completely cut off from the world and no one was allowed to help. The people were just left to die out.
People lost their jobs and the island was falling apart. No one could afford anything and there were no outside resources coming. Everyone was dying and those that weren't were just coming down with the sickness and inevitably going to die. The disease was fierce and unrelenting. People didn't know how it started or even how it was spread but they didn't do anything to prevent it. Most everyone was too far gone to even try and stop it. In just over a year, every single person died.
At first, so did their horses, unable to escape their stalls or pastures and eventually succumbing to starvation, dehydration, or the elements. All active life seemed to be slowly dying off and the fate of Triodad seemed to be completely doomed. Eventually, though, a few of the ingenuitive horses broke free and were able to branch off and restart their lives. It was difficult at first, being used to having their humans bring them their meals. Even more went down as the weeks in the wild passed, unable to really fend for themselves. However, the strong-willed horses survived and prospered and their descendents now rule the island.
